Christina Fernandez: NEA award supporting Fall 2022 survey exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Photography – UC Riverside Arts

Sept. 10, 2022 – Feb. 5, 2023

We are thrilled to share that UC Riverside Arts has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support the upcoming exhibition: “Christina Fernandez: Multiple Exposures”. This survey will feature noted bodies of work by Fernandez such as, including “María’s Great Expedition” (1956-96), “Lavanderia” (2002), “Untitled Multiple Exposures” (1999) and “View from here” (2017 – 2021).

“Christina’s work is deeply informed by postmodernism in art and her political formation in the Chicano Movement. The exhibition examines how these forces come together in her practice”, states Joanna Szupinska, exhibition curator and senior curator at the California Museum of Photography/UCR Arts

“The exhibition will be accompanied by the first extensive monograph devoted to Fernandez’s work. Featuring six essays by art historians and scholars of Latinx Studies, as well as an extensive interview with the artist, the book will trace the development of Fernandez’s work over the last three decades. This heavily illustrated volume will be co-published by the CMP at UCR ARTS and the Chicano Studies Research Center at UCLA in fall 2022.”
