Photo Flux: Unshuttering LA

Christina Fernandez at the Getty Center

Christina Fernandez’s Lavanderia #8 will be featured in the Getty’s upcoming exhibit Photo Flux: Unshuttering LA, which will open in person on May 25, 2021 through October 17, 2021.

Photographs by 35 Los Angeles-based artists challenge ideals of beauty, representation, cultural capital, and objectivity. These primarily Black, Indigenous, and People of Color artists have radically transformed photography to express their own aesthetics, identities, and narratives. Their work is foundational for an emerging generation of artists participating in the Getty Unshuttered program, which engages teens to seek photography as a platform to amplify social topics that resonate in their own lives. Guest curated by Jill Moniz.

Fernandez’s Lavanderia series  consists of cinematic like color photographs made through the etched windows of laundromats at night in the Latino working-class neighborhoods of Los Angeles. View this whole series on our website.
