Lewis Baltz lived and worked in California for the core period of his career. Baltz attended graduate school at Claremont College during a period when “Light and Space” artists such as Larry Bell were teaching. The minimalist style of his mentors is certainly apparent in Baltz’s working methods. Between the mid-1960s and the late 1980s, Baltz created an ambitious body of work primarily consisting of film-like portfolios. More prominently, Lewis Baltz was part of the groundbreaking New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape exhibition in 1975 which included notable peers such as Bernd and Hilla Becher, Robert Adams, and Stephen Shore and therefore marked a shift in contemporary photography. These photographers not only harkened back to 19th Topographic movement involving William Henry Jackson, they pushed the limits of how one represents the interaction between man and landscape through photography. Lewis Baltz was one of the most influential artists to emerge from this key period, a period whose effect is still reverberating in the history of photography.
Baltz’ best known portfolio The New Industrial Parks Near Irvine, California (1974), is typical of his work. The fifty-one pieces in the portfolio are a filmic journey through a landscape that quickly changed from agrarian fields to the center for technology industries. The change in the landscape was vast and sudden, and he was able to capture the process in a typically concise manner. Later portfolios similarly document Western landscapes where man has overtaken the once rural nature of a space. However, Baltz’s aesthetic is detached and objective, extending the notion of documentary photography. His cleanly composed images keep a distance, and therefore any judgment on the activities he documents are left to the viewers mind.
Around 1990 Baltz moved from California to Paris, where he lived until his death in 2014. From then on he began working almost exclusively in large-format color prints being one of the first photographers to print in the oversized formats that today seem the standard for color photography. Documenting the vacant and darkened city streets of Europe, Baltz’s later work is a natural extension of his earlier processes, in that he employed multiple parts for one specific piece and sought to describe and urban space through a photographic, topographic understanding of that space.
