Cinema is both a reflection and shaper of culture. Working with the physical archive, film reels, and the titles inscribed in marker at the canister’s edges, I explore the history and meaning of cinema as a barometer of civilization. Mining archival stacks of films with wide distribution as well as smaller, more experimental ones, I compose and construct images that draw on the film’s titles that operate as cultural hieroglyphics, touchstones that speak to both values and tensions. Many of these films trigger a mnemonic response to our past, as well as, a recontextualized history in the times in which we live.
